Email
has become increasingly important as a means of
communication. Many F/friends
have a free email account provided by their company, their
ISP or a web-based service. Now, using our own free domain 'Quakerweb',
you can have a professional
email address that reflects your relationship
with Quakers. For example:- [email protected]
Need more
than one email address? If you have a need for several email
accounts to meet the needs of different individual members of your
meeting or organisation, no problem. With your
own registered domain name we can provide multiple additional email addresses so that you could also
have:-
[email protected]
or [email protected]
In addition to forwarding and POP3 accounts, we can also
provide you with an auto responder. This automatically
sends a confirmatory reply to any email sent to your email
address.
Finally, unlike the addresses given by many free services
which expect you to log on to their sites to collect your
email, your QuakerWeb
address can forward all your email automatically to any existing
email account of your choice (which may be from your ISP,
your office, or a web-based account like Hotmail.) So,
just like your website address, your email address can
always stays the same, no
matter which email account you use to collect your
email.
(No email
account yet? Don't
worry. If your group does not yet have the use of a secure
'dial-up' email service, we can suggest third-party web-based email
accounts which you can access from any internet computer,
and to which we can forward your email for your
convenience. Alternatively, if you're in the UK,
QuakerWeb can
provide you with our own Dial-Up Internet Access number,
(with standard local telephone call charges.)

Many meetings
have homepages hosted on ISPs such as Geocities.com, and
have web addresses such as
www.internetaccessprovider.com/server~1/host/members/~yourname
Such addresses are
unmemorable, and unwieldly to use. The best option is
to register your own
domain
name. Alternatively, QuakerWeb
can provide you with your own free, personalised sub-domain,
such as www.YourMeeting.quakerweb.org which
also reflects your organisation's relationship with
the Quakers.
Unlike the
long addresses given by many ISPs, having your own domain or
sub-domain allows visitors to these addresses to reach your
website pages wherever they are hosted. Your address always
stays the same, so your details do not need to change
whenever you want to change your ISP.

Website
Creation

|
If your
meeting or organisation
does not yet have a website on the internet, our
temporary templates can be used to create an instant
homepage while you finish designing your own custom website to meet
your own specific requirements.
Creating a
website can be very straightforward and simple, and we
encourage everyone to try using any of the standard web authoring
programs and any FTP
program to upload your files. (E.g. Some wordprocessors can
now save a standard page document as a web page. If
yours can, then
you could create a quick website in a program like MSWord,
and then upload your website to your webspace using any free FTP program!) You can
also use FrontPage to design your pages, with its special system of
publishing web pages, and you'll be pleased to know that
this option is now available free of charge.
Whether you
choose to use our templates or choose to design your own
website (see our Support page),
we are happy to host your website. We expect most users will need less than 5MB per site, but if you
need more, just ask; it's free.
Finally,
don't worry if there is no one in your
meeting to handle the creation of your website; we can
provide you with a simple site, at no charge, and show you
how to make your own updates without any technical know-how,
just by using a standard web browser!)

Domain
Names
|
| |
|
Domain Names have become an
important key asset on the internet. Registering your own exclusive domain name, such as
'YourMeeting.org.uk', will provide you with the most flexible long term
solution. (Some useful advice on choosing a name, for
charities and non-profit organisations, is available here.)
However, do be careful of being overcharged by
some ISPs, or being caught with hidden charges. For example,
if you decide to move the domain from your ISP to a new ISP,
some will charge you a fee. (With us there is no such fee.)
You can
complete the domain registration processes yourself, online,
using the domain
registration service we ourselves frequently use.
Alternatively, we can administer the
official registration of your domain name, as follows:-
- Any domain name ending in
'.org.uk', '.co.uk' or 'net.uk' = £8.00 (incl.fees for 2 years)
- Any domain name ending in '.org', '.com' or
'net' = £12.00 (incl.fees for 1year)
