  Background

There has been much interest in the creation and development of websites for Meetings. My own Meeting (Milton Keynes PM) is one of many which has made enquiries about the best way forward.

Who would design the site? What to include? Who would be in charge of the site? How easy would the site be to update? Who would be in charge? Who should host it? What budget would be needed? Should a domain be registered, and if so, what should it be? And so on.

Following a period of consultation and reflection with many F/friends about the possible way forward, two themes emerged. Firstly, that creating an internet presence for a Meeting should really be simple to setup and maintain, and as affordable as possible.  Secondly, that it would be wonderful if there was a suitable professional service run by Friends and designed for the benefit of Friends.

As a Quaker, with experience of running a design and media consultancy, I was familiar with many of the expensive (costly but professional) corporate services on the market.  In addition, even those that were aimed at the general public and were inexpensive, or even free, proved deficient in terms of flexibility, control over advertising, and quality. It was clear that there ought to be a  better alternative available for Friends' meetings and organisations.

Given the fact that I had access to all the appropriate resources, there seemed to be no excuse not to offer a possible solution...

QuakerWeb is the result, and I hope you like what you see.

In friendship,

Ian Noah

    The Project: A 'Friendly' ISP

The purpose of QuakerWeb is to help facilitate and encourage the use of the internet by Friends, and to provide a service that makes it as easy as possible for Quaker organisations to harness the communications potential of the internet. As a private, non-profit project, administrative time and resources are provided free as a donation to the work of the Yearly Meetings. (Please see our user policies.

QuakerWeb strives to reflect the Quaker spirit in terms of its simplicity, honesty, tolerance and flexibility. It is dedicated to supporting the work of BYM and the Religious Society of Friends at large, by helping to promote, facilitate and expand the community of Quaker websites on the Internet. It seeks to complement the many excellent sites being maintained by F/friends for the benefit of all, and are happy to work with all F/friends. Consequently, in addition to our webhosting services, we also provide various links to other sites with useful services or resources that may be of interest to Friends.

QuakerWeb  is designed solely around the needs of its users, and is offered as an additional option available to Quaker organisations wishing to develop or maintain an internet presence. We encourage feedback and welcome your assistance and your opinions so that the services provided can continually be improved to reflect and meet the requirements of Friends and supporting organisations.

If you represent a Quaker meeting (or business or other organisation identified with the Religious Society of Friends), and would like to find out more, please feel free to contact us or phone us on 07920 92017.

    Free Services?

We offer free hosting of your domain (or you can use our free sub-domain); free space for your website, free email addresses and free forwarding services, as well as free built-in scripts.

But what is meant by 'free'? These days the word 'free' seems to be used by most companies simply to hide the word 'PAY'.  For example; 'Free - with every purchase of our product or service' or  ''Free - when you carry our advertising?'   Should you be forced to buy something just to get something free? Should you be forced to have your 'free' web pages or emails carry advertising you don't want, promoting products or ideas you don't like? QuakerWeb doesn't believe you should. 'Free' should mean free from any costs,  commercialism, propaganda, infact, free from any catches.

So, in 'plain speak', there are no setup charges or annual fees; no ads or banners on your webpages; no contractual strings or catches; no ifs and no buts. (No joke!)

Finally, it's worth mentioning that our satisfaction in offering this service is derived from knowing that this service is helping F/friends seeking a suitable solution to their internet requirements.  If additional services are requested by F/friends, then, as long as these are not already available elsewhere, we will endeavour to fulfill these needs.  (However we would prefer to encourage other F/friends or organisations to provide such services in order to increase the overall variety of services available.)

Why not pass on information about this site to a F/friend?
