  I. Acceptable Use Policy

As an internet service provider to the Quaker community, QuakerWeb's acceptable use policy is designed to produce a better environment for us all. Common sense is the best guide as to what is considered acceptable use. However, for the purposes of clarity, the following are defined as being unacceptable uses and activities:-

a. Illegality: In any form, including but not limited to activities such as unauthorised distribution or copying of copyrighted software, harassment, fraud, trafficking in obscene material, drug dealing, and other illegal activities.

b. Net abuse: Including but not limited to activities such as using a nonexistent return e-mail address on a commercial solicitation, spamming (sending unsolicited advertising to numerous e-mail addresses or newsgroups and/or generating a significantly higher volume of outgoing email than a normal user), trolling (posting outrageous messages in newsgroups to generate numerous responses), mail-bombing (sending multiple messages without significant new content to the same user), subscribing someone else to a mailing list without that person's permission, cross-posting articles to an excessive number of newsgroups, or attempting without authorisation to enter into a secured computer system.

c. Tortuous Conduct: Including but not limited to posting of defamatory, scandalous, or private information about a person without their consent, intentionally inflicting emotional distress, or violating trademarks, copyrights, or other intellectual property rights.

d. Misuse Of System Resources: Including but not limited to employing posts or programs which consume excessive CPU time or storage space.

    II. Content

QuakerWeb does not review all pages for content before they are posted by users/members, and does not verify, endorse or otherwise take responsibility for the contents of such pages.  Consequently, we cannot be held responsible for the content of the pages of users/members who are ultimately responsible for all files contained in their own directory, and who may therefore be held legally liable for the contents of their own web site.

However, where a possible breach of our guidelines is brought to our attention, we reserve the right to determine what constitutes acceptable use, behaviour or activity and to remove any offending pages or sites from our servers, or to terminate user accounts, as appropriate.

The following is a non-exclusive list of content and behaviour that is unacceptable on QuakerWeb, and which may result in prosecution under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.

a. Content that condones, promotes, contains, links to or otherwise commits acts of copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or other intellectual property infringement.
b. Content that contains or contains links to material that is racist, or otherwise extremely offensive to others, especially members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers),  including content which aggravates, harasses, threatens, defames, exploits or abuses others.
c. Content that has been promoted through the sending of unsolicited email (spamming) or mail fraud schemes, or pages that promote or condone the sending of unsolicited email.
d. Content or behaviour that may be deemed to be harmful to the work and reputation of Quakers, QuakerWeb, or any of its users, or partners.

    III.  Warranties

QuakerWeb provides services for managing web sites and email but does not ultimately own or control the data storage and routing environment of the internet. Consequently, whilst aiming to ensure that quality of service has the highest priority, QuakerWeb can make no implied or express warranties about the speed, reliability or continuity of internet-related services, especially those dependent upon third-parties such as data carriers. QuakerWeb can not be held responsible for any deletion, alteration, file corruption or loss of data due to the network, system outages, or other reasons.

a. Users are responsible for regularly monitoring and creating backups of their own files, and agree to use the QuakerWeb resources and infrastructure at their own risk. This service is provided on an "as is" basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied.

b. Neither QuakerWeb nor its partners makes any warranty with respect to any content, information, services, or products provided through or in conjunction with this free service.

c. QuakerWeb and its partners make no guarantee of the accuracy, correctness, or completeness of any information on these web pages and are not responsible for any errors or omissions arising from the use of such information; any failures, delays, or interruptions in the delivery of any content or services contained on our servers; or losses or damages arising from the use of the content or services provided by QuakerWeb.

d. QuakerWeb may also link to or include on its web site resources and information provided by third party partners or providers. We do not guarantee the reliability of this information, nor does the inclusion of this information imply our recommendation of these services; it is merely provided to assist you in the creation of your web site and provide added value to our service.

e. Users/members agree to indemnify QuakerWeb and its partners against any and all claims and expenses, including legal fees, arising from their use of this service. This expressly includes responsibility for any and all liability arising from the violation or infringement of proprietary rights or copyrights and any libelous or unlawful material contained within the users'/members' web site.

    IV.  General Notes

a. Each user is responsible for building and updating his/her web page, and regularly backing up any related data. (Although we will help, users have ultimate responsibility for their sites.)

b. Users/members have the option of using their QuakerWeb site and address to automatically re-direct visitors to their main site which may be hosted elsewhere. In such instances, QuakerWeb reserves the right to display a QuakerWeb courtesy page informing visitors that a re-direction is in process.

c. In the interests of minimising banner intrusions for all users, no paid or exchange advertising is to be displayed on the QuakerWeb template homepages.  Users creating their own custom- designed web pages are free to choose whether they wish to carry advertising, however, any such advertising material must observe the guidelines outlined in section II, above.

    V. Advertising & Sponsorship

QuakerWeb is an independent non-profit project for the benefit of Quakers. All project costs are provided as a personal donation to support the continuing work of the Friends of BYM (and other Yearly Meetings)

Consequently, no commercial sponsorship and advertising is either necessary or solicited for its maintenance. However, subject to feedback from Friends, we may allow a limited amount of promotion of specifically Quaker-related services and organisations (e.g. committees, books, newsletters, courses, accommodation, etc). If you think you may be eligible, please feel free to discuss this by contacting us at [email protected].
